It lasted about a week before such a fuss was raised over that it I was an angry mob to come sweep me away and lop off my head. The plugin worked just fine - the problem was that the most vocal users complained that if they were composing a long message, they would timeout during the composition. When attempting to send, only then would they get an error, and by then their entire composition was lost. I tried an autosave plugin, but by then it was too late. As you mentioned at the end of your post, another problem I forsee in our environment with a timeout solution is that multiple students here often use squirrelmail on the same machine, from the same windows login session, within a short period of time (ex., in the last two minutes of a lab). It'd be of no help to me there... I put 1.4.2 into production Tuesday morning. It's only been a day, but I haven't heard of a single person whose sessions have gotten confused and their preferences munged (knock on wood...).
