The SM access log is located in data/access_log - That file shows you who logged in or out, when they did it, and the ip address of the computer they used.
You could also try your Apache error log if you're using Apache (what other Web server is there?). The Apache error log is usually here by default. /var/log/httpd/error_log I had similar problems before I upgraded to SM 1.4.2.
