cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/squirrelmail co squirrelmail .... cd squirrelmail cvs up -Pd still works. maybe you've made error with -r option or accidently seen SF backup/borked cvs copy during update.
