What kind of tags do you see? SM 1.4 strips out the same tags as 1.2, if not more. You should try a 1.4.3 snapshot, since there have been some fixes recently that format such mails better, but in your version, you shouldn't be seeing much HTML, unless it's an insane (possibly non-compliant) HTML message.
