There are two plugins that sense and notify you of new messages, one being
called "new mail", which comes with SM.

Two others:

http://squirrelmail.org/plugin_view.php?id=124
http://squirrelmail.org/plugin_view.php?id=119

If you want to build message notification into your own web page, then
you'll be on your own to build something, although feel free to ask here
for pointers.

If you make something that might be useful for others, we'd love to hear
about it!
