First guess is that SM is using SSL and MercuryS is expecting SSL/TLS using STARTTLS. I'd turn on the session logging in MercuryS and then check out what SM is doing with the sending. I'd pass the session log off to the Mercury list or even David Harris and ask what's happening. This may be that there is a basic incompatibility between MercuryS and SM in the methods used.
