I think you are using Maildir based setup. Maybe Qmail + Courier-IMAP.

SquirrelMail has configuration utility named conf.pl. You should be able
to find it in /usr/share/squirrelmail/config directory. Connect to your
server with ssh or use console. run conf.pl program and use D command to
set your IMAP server correctly.

Please provide details about your configuration, if you want answers and
not guesses. There are many RPM distributions and many different email
system setups.

You were able to correct to /webmail address only after some time, because
during that time system maintenance scripts or you restarted webserver.
