I don't beleive that you need a "Sent" folder to send emails, emails are moved there after sending, it is another process. Usually for your kind of problems you need to change setup settings for folders using the config.pl utility inside the "config" dir. The right setting depends on the tipe of IMAP server and mailbox you use. There are some posts on the wiki about it.
