Your question makes absolutely no sense. imapd in your case would be
the imap server from the university of washinginton (or more
commonly known as uw-imap). This service is started via xinet.d you
should take a look in /etc/xinet.d/ for the imapd configuration
file. Make sure it's NOT disabled. Once you've done that, restart
xinet.d (/etc/init.d/xinet.d restart) and your imap server should be
running. All IMAP logins for uw-imap are system accounts. That means
the user you use to login to the computer will be the same user you
  use to check your email.

If that's not the information you're after, please be a little more
specific with your question than "system to attach to that system",
  it makes very little sense.
