There is no other way around this then buying a SSL cert? sucks, I guess I'll have to go explore the strange world of IMP - wish me luck

This is a known issue MacOS X. There are two options to fixing the issue. You can enable ssl in the web configuration, but this requires certificates. The other solution is to make sure that you have the latest security patches installed. The patch released in late november/early december addressed this issue.
