SquirrelMail has no concept of /home/user.  The only time it ever touches
the filesystem directly is to manage it's own attachment and data
directories.   We use the IMAP commands to create mailboxes.  How and
where the IMAP server actually creates the mailbox is unknown, and
unimportant to SquirrelMail.

SM does not create home directories for users at all, under any
circumstances.  From the setup you have described, I can recommend that
you switch to Cyrus IMAPd, which does not require user home directories. 
(Courier et al may be able to do this as well, but I wouldn't know)
