I think problem is related to the fact that UW2002+ and Debian disable
plaintext auth by default and Sarge does not create /etc/c-client.cf even
when you ask to enable plain auth.

You can also check /usr/share/doc/libc-client*/README.Debian.gz
I can't say exact libc-clientsomething directory, because you haven't said
which flavor of uw you are using.
