yes squirrelmail uses external db. you can config it to use mysql by going
to the doc directory (usually /var/www/html/squirrelmail<version>/doc) and
read about the db-backend.txt. this means creating the suggested
database/s and table/s and then doing the ./config to set up SM to use the
mysql.
