See if your IMAP server supports server side sort, if it does, enable
it in SquirrelMail (I think it's under General Options, but I cannot
remember off the top of my head).

As for the malloc error, I'd suggest ensuring you have the latest
versions of both apache, and php, as I know there was a security
advisory release recently about both of them in regards to bad memory
handling. I've never seen SM cause this kind of error myself.
