I won't send this one to the mailinglist since I guess this is of minor
interest for the others.

Nah, you'd be surprised at what is useful to have in the archives. I am cc'ing the list.

I will change my system soon and that will probably remove the problem,
but I'm not really satisfied because I think my running system should be
able to handle SM fine.

Sure, it's not that your specs (versions) should (can't) run it correctly, it's that something is configured or compiled wrong on your system as far as I can tell. Wish I had more ideas, but this has only come up once before and no one could figure out the problem.

Apache is 1.3.23 and PHP is 4.1.0. These are not current versions but
according to the INSTALL file PHP 4.0.6 is sufficient. I can't find any
documentation showing a minimal apache version.

IIRC, 4.0.6 is actually incorrect, but that's splitting hairs. There isn't a minimal apache version, or at least not one worth mentioning.

Unless you come up with something fantastic or interesting, I'll just
accept that SM won't run on my system until I upgrade it.

Or fix it. But I honestly have no idea what would be wrong.

Btw I still believe that it is a problem that is isolated to my system and
not a general SM problem.

Bogi

I just checked and the problem is the same when I use SM 1.4.2 so I
guess the problem won't be fixed by using the newest CVS (I might be
wrong ofcourse).
In 1.4.2 the problematic line is functions/options.phh 293 position
78. The problem is at the end of the line where the ">" in "if
(origVal.charAt(i)>=" is interpreted as the closing of the INPUT tag.

So then you see that this is a greater sign inside of some JavaScript that is being misinterpreted by your server and/or browser. SM's output is not incorrect as far as I can see (although you didn't send the actual HTML code for that tag), so the question should be not what is wrong with SM, but what is wrong with your server setup. The last time I remember this problem (and the only other time I heard of it), I think the person had their roommate reinstall their PHP/webserver system to make it go away.

I think the problem must be local to my server since not many people
experience this too.
My PHP version is 4.1.0-317.

That's a bit old. I suggest an upgrade as your first step in trying to fix this.

Cheers,

Paul
