Put it in the root of the webserver (www.yourserver.com/favicon.ico). 
Note that both IE and Mozilla/Firefox are notoriously quirky about
displaying favicon, IE won't even look for it until you add it to your
favorites, Firefox /Mozilla will display it but keeps the icon in the
cache so it may disappear when the cache gets dumped.
