another thing to consider is that if you were just accessing the maildir for the first time, your imap server has to build its internal cache (courier does this, I know). Try accessing the folder with another imap client first, and then see how it fares with squirrelmail. I have zero issues with maildir, reiserfs, and squirrelmail (1.5.1-cvs, updated about 2 weeks ago)I've been using the 27k message Maildir for a few months now, so it's getting polled regularly from Thunderbird on my desktop. Now, the two other users I set up for the test cases were not accessed before the test, but they were accessed several times during the test, so after the first access, the times should have leveled off if Courier-IMAP caching was the culprit.
I am going to upgrade Courier-IMAP (I'm only one version off of current and the Changelog doesn't seem to indicate anything relevant but good practice nonetheless) and I am also going to install the devel version of SquirrelMail to see if the new header caching mechanisms are what I'm looking for.
As another experiment today, I installed and tested Hastymail webmail today. The first time I hit the Maildir with Hasty timings were identical to SM. However, the second hit was much faster. So, using a SM that has (better?) header caching would seem like a good option.
Yet another idea I received was increasing the amount of memory a PHP script can use - I went from 8M to 50M. Load times went from 40 secs to 37 secs, probably within the margin of error, really. So I keep searching.
