If you have the user data base in NIS.. (i.e. passwd)
Make sure that you do not have it in the password file as well..

Or.. Make sure that the search order is NIS -> PASSWD file

If the password file is searched every login ( sequentally )
that might create a high load even if the user exists in NIS..
