Let me chime in here and say that I also have this exact thing. Attachments become converted into pages of random ASCII characters, and their file extensions (Windows files) are automatically changed to .mixed
I have even upgraded to 1.5.0 test version to try to fix it, but it still occurs. I am reaching absolute desperation as some of these attachments that users are receiving are critical.

FYI, I'm suing 1.4.3a and the latest patch fix, but still have the same problem. There's been other people reporting the same problem for some months now, but nobody seems to be looking into it...
