That's because you've got most of the headers/messages cached on the local
machine which would never be possible with a webmail client.  Squirrelmail
does not suck on large folders but it's never going to be as fast as a
"real" IMAP client that does local caching.  I can open the first 50
message list of my 11k message folder in 3 seconds flat.  That's using
Courier and Maildir though, doing the same thing on UW-IMAP/mbox would be
quite painful.
