A safer option, IMHO, is to follow this guide here:
http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/en_US/EmbeddedSquirrelMailLogin
Make this your the page users go to for webmail access.  Then you can
customize it with PHP/HTML to your heart's desire without fear of breaking
something.
