You mentioned /home/httpd/squirrelmail. On my gentoo system, it puts files in /var/www/ so I'm assuming you're either using a none standard setup, or your using an older version of all versions of software

I'm almost embarresed to admin the problem .. It was all a simple overlooking of the configuration problem.
it all boils down to missing a " in the begining of the Document Root.
Sorry to bother all .. thanks for all your efforts to try and help me fix this.
