I've had that same problem forever and none of the solutions help. I guess my imap server just doesn't support it. VOPmail IMAP4 Server 4.7.192.0
Are you sure you tried the above? The plugin uses that variable to see if it should use charset based searches. If it is set to False, then it does not use them.
"Yes, I'm sure. Filters don't work whether it's set to false or true."
Is there something in PHP 4.x that would cause the problem? With every php 4.x version I've used, setting it to true would cause the charset problem and setting it to false would cause SM to totally break and SM would have to be reinstalled (corruption?). So in other words, I could never use "false" because SM wouldn't work.
I just tried using SM 1.4.3a with PHP5 (WinXP) and with the option set to false, it appears to be working. (although it threw UID search errors a few times. timing?) This is the first time I've every gotten it to work. Not sure why it works for me with PHP5 and not PHP4
However, it still doesn't work with this configuration:
Imap server = Windows 2000 Microsoft-IIS/5.0
SM server = Linux (red hat 8 I think) Apache/1.3.31 (Unix) PHP/4.3.3 mod_perl/1.29
Any known reason why that wouldn't work?
I'm going to test on Debian with php4 and SM 1.4.3a+ to see if I can get things working.
