Now I got it! I simply made the entire SM dir owned by the apache user. I
have SM been running with the ownership for that specific virtual host
environment. I had thought that was required... But hey, works fine now!

As as concluding suggestion you may want to point this out somewhere in
the INSTALL or README file.
