POP3 protocol is used to retrieve messages from server and store them in local computer. IMAP protocol stores messages on server. You can use both protocols only if your POP3 client leaves all messages on the server and stores only copies of them. You usually can find "Leave messages on server" or similar option in your POP3 client software configuration.
