Please do not top-post, thanks. Also, please keep responses on-list.
I am fairly new to SquirrelMail. I have installed version 1.43a and it is working correctly.
I am running squirrelmail remotely i.e. on a separate server from the mail server (as I do not have access to the mail server).
Now (like many I suspect) I am trying to reduce the amount of spam. I have seen various plugins.
I would assume that BayesSpam can work equally well whether used locally or remotely.
The mail server does have SpamAssassin running (I can see the headers).
Can the spamassassin plugins work remotely? or are they only useful locally? Similarly, the spam filters that use DNS lists. Can they work remotely?
I looked in the SM documentation, and was surprised that there was no section on local and remote.
You have to describe what you mean by "local" and "remote". SM is installed on a mail server usually (but it need not be) and all the plugins installed in the same place. Unless a plugin requires access to the mail server, it can run anywhere you install SM. BayesSpam should be one such plugin. Where you access SM from using your browser is irrelevant.

which SA plugin? not sure, but i think "SpamAssassin Configuration" would be NO, but "SpamAssassin+SQL" might be a YES if all the connections are done via DSN. you'll have to check it out yourself. however, SA doesn't need a lot of user interaction anyway... most of your users won't even use it.
