I've made some test one more time.
squiremail-1.2.11 works fine with exactly the same settings and imap server as
version 1.4.4. I really don't think this is my imap server problem. Besides
sm-1.2.x it
works fine with other php based webmail systems. Only squirellmail versions
1.4.x
are affected.
I've also walked through imap conversation by hand (using telnet)
and everything seems to be ok.

Could you point me to the piece of php code resposible for date parsing and
messages list generation?
I'll try to find problem by my self.
