can you show sample user entry with all attributes available to
unprivileged user? Strip password hashes and any private information if it
is listed there.

Can you check, if v3 bind or ssl is required in order to connect to ldap?

SquirrelMail 1.5.1cvs contains experimental ldap backend support in
change_password plugin. Code retrieves userpassword attribute value. Maybe
it can be useful, if you know mail store attribute name.
