This is a follow up to my previous request for help. I haven't found any
reference to this previously (although I could have missed it).

background;

I just upgrade from Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 (Panther) to OS X 10.4.1
(Tiger). I don't know what the previous version of squirrelmail was, but
the current version is 1.4.4.

After upgrading, I experienced a problem with the imap databases. This
had become a well known problem and I have had to resolve it with the
procedure detailed here
http://www.afp548.com/comment.php?mode=view&cid=1438

This problem usually manifests with Apple's mail program, not
squirrelmail. This time after reconstructing the database, some of my
accounts started acting strange, in particular the INBOX and any folder
with messages was no longer accessible.

Furthermore, I could no longer mark messages as read and squirrelmail was
now marking read messages as unread. (i.e. if I marked them as read in
the Apple mail client, squirrelmail would undo that flag.)

Resolution:

I finally solved this problem by deleting the user.seen file in
/var/db/imap/user. Of course, now all my mail is marked as unread, but
squirrelmail and the Apple Mail program now work correctly again.
