It had nothing to do with SquirrelMail (ofcourse). Problems started after I rebooted my server. After checking almost everything i could think of, I found a .htaccess file with 'php_flag session.save_path /dev/shm' in it in the SquirrelMail directory. And /dev/shm was no longer mounted after the reboot. So there we go. Problem solved. Thanks everyone for helping out!
