Thanks to those that replied to this query. At this point we think we have it pinned down to either some ssl-unclean-shutdown related directives that were in our old apache config for this site that didn't make it into the new one or unexpected results from some rewrites we are doing in the htaccess file for this domain.
Either way, it appears to be a local configuration oddity and not a SM issue from what we can tell at the moment. Thanks again for your time and your responses.
