Standard Courier installation needs authentication service and Maildir
directory structure in user's home directory. If authentication service is
not started - all login attempts fail. If Maildir is not present, IMAP
server drops connections. Have you started courier authdaemon? Do you have
~username/Maildir directory with cur, new and tmp subdirectories? Are they
writable by user?
