yes, you can. as long as you comply with GPL and don't have any plans to
sell your project as closed source product.

bzip2 packages are smaller. 80% for php scripts, 66% for compiled
translation data.

use 1.4.5 with php register_globals set to off and error_reporting set to
E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE

document all your changes

check Fedora updates

if they update php to 5.0.5 - see squirrelmail bug tracker #1237160 before
upgrading your php packages. Bug tracker can be found on
http://sourceforge.net/projects/squirrelmail

get 1.4.6 when it is released (currently there is no estimate release date)

test it

apply your changes
