[SM-USERS] SM on OSX Server with authentication

I'm so green I don't even know if this question is stupid. Apple OSX Server 10.3.9 with the 'bundled' SquirrelMail. After yet another bout of relay problems my customer's server is now set as follows: all users passwords are 'open directory'. mail server settings are to require CRAM-MD5 authentication for both IMAP and SMTP (POP is disabled anyway). email clients (i.e. Mail) login and send/receive ok. SquirrelMail doesn't login any more.  Is this because it doesn't support this form of authentication?  Or would it if I had some sort of plug-in or changed some sort of configuration file? Since I can't login I don't even know about the sending side.  I presume this would fail for the same reason - and be fixed in the same way? The customer needs to be able to send and receive locally, from remote using their own laptops, and from remote 'internet cafe-style' using SquirrelMail. Does anyone have experience with this sort of setup?
