Sounds to me like you've not got your SMTP server setup right. If you
are seeing new messages in /var/mail, and you are using Maildir
format, then your SMTP server is delivering mail to the good ol' unix
mailbox style, instead of the Maildir format. Check your SMTP server
documentation on how to correct this issue.
