FreeBSD uses dovecot 1.0alpha5. Server contains many configuration options and it is impossible to guess your used setup. Check logs. Dovecot sends log information to syslog. /var/log/ files. If you use Maildir mailboxes, make sure that you have Maildir directory structure in your home directory. If you have enabled non default namespace, make sure that you can use imap server with default namespace settings and default default_mail_env value. Dovecot 1.0alpha5 might break in some SquirrelMail scripts due to incomplete imap fetch responses. Issue is fixed after alpha5 release and FreeBSD ports don't show any patches added to standard 1.0a5 package.
