I second John's advice... I've run UW IMAP and
dovecot before coming to
cyrus, and cyrus is far more scalable.... In the
past its been difficult
to set up, but now Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 (and a
few other
distributions) comes with cyrus RPM packages that
make the job much
easier. I can't comment on courier, but i think its
also quite good.
I can also point you to an excellent guide to
setting cyrus up together
with postfix, a Mysql based authentication system
and a web based
admin. once you've got all that working,
squirrelmail installs and
runs easily:
http://www.delouw.ch/linux/Postfix-Cyrus-Web-cyradm-HOWTO/html/
I recently completed setting up such a system, and
it works beautifully.
Finally, if you're really dead set on courier, Ralf
Hildebrant's "The
Book of Postfix" (a superb book!) has a chapter on
"a company mail
server" , describing how to set up a complete mail
system based on
Postfix, Cyrus Sasl, LDAP, Courier MailDrop and
Courier Imap

My server uses FreeBSD 6.0-STABLE.
I can see Cyrus ports there, but I don't know which
version should I go for, which one is the stable one?

One more question
Regarding the storage.
I have more than 160k users, so could I use
affordeable NAS or SAN and make more than one server
stores the emails and read from them so in case one
server fail, others would still run?
Thank you,
-Abdullah
I use cyrus 2.2.12-xx on my FreeBSD 5.4.
