You have obviously not even done your basic homework and looked at the main web page for help http://www.squirrelmail.org/ and the FAQS page because right on the main page is a reference to the 4,4,1 issues.
That's not quite true but perhaps I could have done better. However without your pointer I don't think I would have recognised the PHP bug as the cause of the problem.
It does seem that the server-side sort work-around fixes the problem so I guess that's it.
