You said you were messing around with filters, maybe a filter is active
redirecting all your mail from inbox to trash?
I'm not familiar with dovecot myself but maybe you should check your
imap filters?
This would make sense because if such a filter is active, even if you
move messages back to inbox, the filter will move them back to Trash
again immediately.

I use Squirrelmail 1.4.5 with Directadmin which uses Dovecot. I was
messing around with filters and folders in Squirrelmail. Not sure what
I did. Now a bunch of my messages out of my Inbox went to the trash
folder. No problem. Go to trash and show all then select all and move
them back. They disappear from trash. Go to Inbox. There still not
there. Go to trash. They are all still there. All new messages go to
inbox.
Can anyone tell me whats up or how to fix it?
