(p missing above). I'm going through a similar process but moving to Maildir format and that requires replacing the '/' with '.' as well (plus running the mailboxes through conversion programs. (We did this because we do incremental backups and some pople have huge Mailboxes so any emails added cause the entire file to be backed up vs. the new messages.
