Yes, and as I mentioned, one that can probably be added to an already
existing plugin w/out too much hassle I would hope.

See the template plugin (nothing to do with templating in the core).

This is already accomplished by the reply_buttons plugin (which IIRC
was working with 1.5 at least a few months ago).
