Not sure if we had the exact same problem, but we experienced similar problems with attachments: 'Call to a member function on a non-object in /usr/share/squirrelmail/src/read_body.php on line 410'. We were using Squirremail 1.4.5 on Debian, an upgrade to 1.4.6 seems to have solved it. I have only done limited testing on this, so don't take my word for it, but it might be worth a shot.
