I don't know if it is possible for you to change, but you may want to consider using another IMAP server. One which supports sorting (and threading). I realize changing software is a huge pain, however, in this case it may be worthwhile. Having the IMAP server providing the sorting is a huge win; PHP can do this, but it does it S L O W L Y.
