Along with this comment, you can set the auto_expunge option to false
in the config. This will stop SM from "purging" the mailbox when you
select it (and after deleting emails). It does, however, give the
users the ability to hit the button to "purge". You can always address
that issue with a minor code change (see lines 748-751 in
functions/mailbox_display.php).
