Hiya
        If you are trying to link against a .a library then you need to do
a static link not a dynamic as it is not an so file.  so set the
-lvpopmail line in the Makefile to be the fullpath (including filename of
the .a file library)  so for example it could be

-l/usr/local/lib/libvpopmail.a

This should statically link the library to the binary and be happy..
(obvioulsy change the path to the one you have).
