Looks like your password worked or it would not have gone this far.  You
need to setup the users Maildir folder and assign the correct permissions to
it...  There is a program called maildirmake that can do this for you...
The user/users-group should own the maildir and subfolders

Mine are like so:
<users homedir>/        <- 775
<users homedir>/Maildir <- 770
<users homedir>/Maildir/cur     <- 700
<users homedir>/Maildir/new     <- 700
<users homedir>/Maildir/tmp     <- 700

If you are using system accounts, you can also create the above Maildir
structure in /etc/skel and then any new users added to the system will get
it.
