I'm evaluating various ways to eliminate the setuid requirements. It should be doable, with the only sacrificial lamb turning out to be FastCGI support.
I am running sqwebmail fine as vmail:vmail with Apache suExec. I am not using fcgi, though.
In my (limited) experience you only need to add a switch to configure to disable suid installation and do some changes in the docs. There you could note that the non-suid option disables fcgi. These changes would surely help newcomers.
