suid root problems

i'm only using vpopmail and wanted to switch sqwebmail to using only the
vpopmail:vchkpw user, so i changed the binary suid vpopmail:vchkpw, but now,
the only thing i get is an internal server error. could anyone tell me what
i've forgotten ??
