I have done the same thing with white folders and transparent background
and it worked fine. Initially I didn't replace all the gif files, make
sure you replace folder.gif and folder2.gif (I think, it's been a long
time).

Also make sure your browser (or ISP) hasn't cached the images and hold
shift while pressing reload/refresh.

I don't know if that will help.
