I just got this similar error...

Internal error (module auth.c, line 197) - contact system administrator

sqwebmail 1.2.0
RH 7.0
Kernel 2.2.16-22

I logged out my normal identity, then logged in a new user to test out the
new user in the system and that is the error I got. Funny thing is - unless
I'm looking in the wrong place, there is no auth.c
